Poughkeepsie to Beacon through the hills - Recap
Sunday, July 7, 2024 - Recap
Fahnestock State Park and around
44 miles
Sunday, July 7, 2024
This is super last minute, but with the humidity finally supposed to ease, I was thinking of doing a ride through Fahnestock State Park where there's an opportunity to swim in Canopus Lake. Please do join if you don't have other plans for Sunday.
The plan is to take a morning train from Grand Central to Poughkeepsie (around two hours away), do a moderately demanding uphill section, stop at the lake and then go mostly downhill through Cold Spring to Beacon. From both towns there is an opportunity to take the train back to New York.
In the morning, meet in the Main Concourse at the clock, around 8.40 or slightly before. If you plan to board the train in Harlem, please let me know.
As for food, I would suggest bringing some snacks, but up until ~20 miles, just before the main uphill climb, there will be pizzerias, stores and sandwich shops along the way. The lake beach has a concession stand, but I am not sure it will be open. If we decide to eat at the end of the ride, there are several options in Cold Springs and Beacon.

The train that we would like to be on leaves Grand Central at 8:50 AM.

Also, a word of caution: humidity is expected to drop significantly on Sunday, but it will still be very warm, in the mid-80s. If you're considering riding, please bring a lot of water. It's also fine to cancel on the day if the heat seems too much.

Got it. Where in the station do you want to meet up before the train? Also what're you thinking for lunch? I'm happy to stop somewhere or could pack a lunch.
