Very hilly! 5,000 feet of elevation gain
65 miles
Saturday, May 31, 2025
Elevation Gain:
- Coming on this ride means you've done lots of springtime riding and your quads are up to it! At about 5,000 feet of elevation gain, it's going to be hilly.
Route Direction:
- I'd like to do this hilly ride either from Cold Spring to Tarrytown, or the other way around - based on which way the wind is blowing. Right now, the route assumes north to south, but I may reverse the route planned depending on wind direction forecasted that day.
Group Expectations:
- Pacing - I personally have a much better time when I do these longer rides together with friends. So, I would like the group to stick together, meaning that the fastest among us would slow down a bit and allow others to keep up. I do not want an everyone-for-themselves ride. For me, part of the quality of the group riding experience is predicated on how you ride as a member of the group... The essence of cooperative group riding is to work to sustain a cohesive unit of riders working in unison to ensure that everyone who starts the ride ends together. Resist the urge to sprint at the pace that you want to go and instead go at the pace that the group needs to go.
- Hills - On the climbs, we will take it at our own paces and probably spread out, then regroup at the summits.
- Speed subgroups - If we have more than ~10 people attending, I will split us into two smaller groups of maybe 4-6 riders based on your anticipated pace, and we'll spend the day in those groups. I think the ride will go more smoothly that way!
A note about lunch!
- Please note that, assuming we travel from north to south, the planned lunch spot is late in the ride, so you should eat before the ride, and bring snacks!
- Lunch spot - David's Bagles in Pomona, NY, around mile 44.
Starting point:
- The target "Hudson Line" Metro North train to Cold Spring leaves at 7:55am. I suggest aiming to get to Grand Central by 7:40 or so.
- To secure space for our bikes, I plan to just head straight to the train, rather than meeting up by the Grand Central clock.
- Metro North train schedule website here.
- Note: if we reverse the route, and start in Tarrytown, we may be targeting the 7:50am train instead. TBD.
Longer option:
- If you want to bike back to the city from Tarrytown, rather than hopping on the Metro North there, you could easily just cycle over to the South County Trail and make this a 90-100-mile ride. We'll see how the quads feel.
