Look for the bare necessities
The simple bare necessities
(in this case...hills)
We'll start the ride from J. Hood, pausing for a quick photo on the GW. Then ride surface streets through Tenafly, Demarest & Ridgewood. It's up through Saddle River from there and back across the state line and into Harriman State Park
There's about a 3 mile climb up Bear Mountain. After the descent there are still a couple of shorter climbs and plently of scenery to soak up.
Updates to come on the route with lunch options.
Finally, we'll ride over the bridge to Garrison and take MetroNorth back to the city.
Bring dollar bills to buy cold water from vending machines on the mountain - there's no potable water. Also bring plenty of snack food, you'll want to fuel up before tackling those hills!
Elevation Gain: 3,963

This sounds super tempting with the weather forecast - but what time do you figure we should count on getting back to the city with lunch break and train back and all? Last time I did Bear was a different route.
Thanks!

There are going to be a few factors to consider. Do you have a sense of your avg pace?
In terms of lunch, I'd prefer to have something light but if everyone prefers to do a sit down lunch that will take a little longer. Lastly, depends a bit on the train schedule. All in, I'd recommend blocking 6 hours to be safe

On the flats I'd say 15ish but this is obviously not flat, and I haven't been in practice this winter as much as the previous few. I'm also a fan of quick meal and keep going especially as I'd rather do the climb before it gets to the peak temperature of the day (but maybe it'll be cooler there than in the city?). Looks like there's a train every hour in the early afternoon and it's just over an hour back to the city. I was guessing we might reach Garrison at 2, which means the 2:24 train gets into the city at 3:37 - got to think how to juggle it.
Thanks!
