This scenic late summer bike tour follows an eastward route along the varied shore communities and parklands of the Great South Bay. Starting at the Islip LIRR Station, we will ride on active roadways with some car traffic as we pass through Great River and stop at the historic Bayard Cutting Arboretum for a brief visit and lunch or snack under specimen trees. The route continues through Patchogue, Bellport, Brookhaven, and Shirley before crossing over the Smith Point Bridge to the scenic Fire Island Wilderness Nature Center and spectacular Atlantic Ocean beaches. We plan to cycle at a moderate 10-mph pace and enjoy a brief ocean swim before riding appx 8 miles to the Mastic-Shirley LIRR station for the Manhattan train (Car drivers can return on the same train to the Islip station). With a total of appx 33 miles on mostly flat paved roadways, this scenic ride is ideal for moderate to advanced cyclists. New members esecially welcome!
MEET: 10:01 am at the Islip LIRR Station. A group of us will travel east on the 8:44 am train from Penn Station. Note: please board the train as early as possible; bike space is limited!
COST: Off-peak train LIRR fare to Islip is $15.25; return fare from Mastic-Shirley is $18.25
CHECKLIST: Multispeed bike, helmet, lock, sun and eye protection, watter bottle, spare tube, snack, lunch, bathing suit/towel, bungee cords
