SUMMER Training Series 2020

It's Time To
Get Back In The Saddle!

Ride Dates: July 11th - August 22nd

STS means SUMMER Training Series, right? Well, at least this year it does… Whether you just need to get back up to speed after the long stay-at-home orders, or you want to train for an event, STS can help you meet your goals.

All New Routes – We're excited to have all new routes this year. Many go to familiar spots, others explore completely new areas.

Social Distancing – We fully expect COVID-19 to continue to be a risk this summer, so we're implementing a number of changes to reduce that risk. The biggest change is breaking the rides up so each route has a different start time and location to keep group sizes small. Other social distancing guidelines will be developed based on what we learn between now and the beginning of the series.

What happens each week…

Rides take place on Saturday each week, starting Saturday July 11 and running through Saturday August 22. Rides will pushed to Sunday in the event of bad weather.

"Week 0" Self Timed Ride - you will ride around Central Park four times as quickly as you can without it being unpleasant. The elapsed time will translate into your ride speed. Knowing your ride speed will make sure you pick rides that are right for you throughout the series.  Join us for brunch in Harlem afterwards.

Knowing your speed is important because we ride informally – rides do not have leads and sweeps. So in the first couple weeks you'll get a sense of who is compatible with your speed and style of riding and then it's usually best to stick with that group throughout the series and "buddy-up". Though riding with a slower group is always an option if you're willing or prefer to slow down for any given ride.

Weeks 1-5; Training - you'll gradually build up distance (and speed) depending on your particular goal as explained below.

Week 1: (NJ) Market Diner + Piermont, Nyack or Rockland Lake

Week 2: (NY) Bronxville & Larchmont + Scarsdale, Rye or The Bronx

Week 3: (NJ) Rockland Lake + Nyack, Saddle River or Bear Mountain

Week 4: (NJ) Saddle River Trail + S. Mountain Road or Market Diner

Week 5: (NY) Bronx River + Rye, Armonk or Pound Ridge

Week 6; Ride & Picnic - a more relaxed, social week with plenty of food and fun.

Ride levels explained…

3 Core Level of rides each week

-- Healthy Habits

-- Metric Century

-- Century

3 additional options on select weeks

-- Easy Rider

-- Multi surface

-- Hill Climbing

You may mix and match levels week to week – you're not tied into any particular level.

"Healthy Habits" rides are geared for people who prefer to keep their ride distances in the 30 to 50 mile range. (view map)

"Metric Century" rides start out at approximately 40 miles and build to 65 miles (100 kilometers) - a metric century over the course of 6 weeks. (view map)

"Century" rides start out at approxiately 60 miles and build up to a challenging, hilly 100 miles over the course of 6 weeks. (view map)

"Hill Climber" rides are for people who love hills. If you're an advanced rider who wants to challenge yourself, these rides are for you. (view map)

"Multi-Surface" rides try to get away from cars as much as possible. Sometimes you're riding on paved back-roads and trails, other times on gravel trails, and one week you'll even do dirt roads. These rides usually require wider tires. The minimum and recommended tire sizes will be listed in the ride description. (view map)

"Easy Rider" rides are tailored for shorter distance riders. Max mileage is ~35 miles. Easy rider routes are available all 6 weeks, but many weeks require a train or subway return (see ride pages for details).

So lots of options for all types of riders. Sign up today.
