STS1 – Multi-Surface – Nyack Beach - Recap
Saturday, July 18, 2020 - Recap
Tallman, Nyack Beach Trail, Cuomo Bridge & The OCA
45 to 63 miles
Saturday, July 18, 2020
Please Note: The portion of this ride after Tarrytown is not skinny tire friendly. After that point 38-47mm tires are recommented, and 32mm tires are a minimum for all but the strongest of riders.
Multi-Surface riders have several options. We'll decide how things go on the day of the ride and may divide the group up based on people's preferences.
We will go north along the route all the groups take to Market Diner. Then we'll ride the gravel trail in Tallman Mountain State Park and then the Old Erie Trail (aka the Raymond Esposito Trail) between Sparkill and Nyack where we'll stop at Runcible Spoon.
Riders then have a choice – People who want a longer ride will then head north to "Treason Site" (where Benedict Arnold betrayed the Colonial Army), and then back down to Nyack. That excursion adds 14 miles to the ride (but it's really lovely). Those who want a shorter ride will skip that part and continue on with the rest of the ride.
Everyone then heads over the Cuomo Bridge (🎥) where you have another choice – go north on the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail (OCA) to the Croton Reservoir, or go south on the OCA back to the City.
Going north requires a MetroNorth return which some people may not be comfortable with. But it's a very pretty ride. It's also 4 miles longer than going south.
Going south avoids MetroNorth, and it's mostly really lovely, but there are some ugly sections in Yonkers, and the multi-surface ride 5 weeks later goes over the southern section of the OCA (albeit in the opposite direction).
In either case there are MetroNorth stops all along the OCA, so with either option you can always bail and take MetroNorth home if you need to cut the ride short.
Route going south on OCA w/ GPX & cuesheet download options
(45 or 59 miles, no MetroNorth)
Route going north on OCA w/ GPX & cuesheet download options
(49 or 63 miles, requires MetroNorth return)
