STS4 – Metric Century Riders – Saddle River - Recap
Saturday, August 8, 2020 - Recap
Saddle River, Market Diner, River Road
59 miles
Saturday, August 8, 2020
In week 4 we'll try something completely different – the Saddle River Trail. It's a beautiful oasis in the middle of a surburban desert… Unfortunately, there are a few miles riding through Hackensack which are a bit ugly. But the Paramus Mall & Ikea are nearby – the route we'll go is as good as it gets. But once you've gotten to the trail you'll forget all that…
The trail itself is nicely paved and really quite picturesque. Unlike the Bronx River Trail (which is an option in week 5), the trail is not particularly curvy, so everyone should enjoy it. When we get to the end of the trail we'll have lunch at a nearby diner.
Metric Century Riders pretty much have the week's best route. After lunch, they wander around the very posh and quaint neighborhoods of Saddle River (🎥) and Upper Saddle River (🎥). Then they'll head back through Westwood, Harrington Park, and Rockleigh where they'll stop at Market Diner before going back to the City via River Road (🎥).
Miles: 59

Please Note: This ride will split into (at least) two groups at the start. Peter will lead a group for riders wanting to do the full 59 miles, and Jay will lead a group for people who prefer a shorter distance. He will do the climb to the top of the hill in Alpine, then ride down River Road for a total of 53 miles. You can also switch to the Healthy Habits route in Westwood or Harrington Park for a total of 52 miles.

Jonathan S.
I generally love the routes planned by Jay. This particular one introduced me to the Saddle River path, where I'd never been before. I followed it for 44 miles; when I got to Route 9W, I decided to take 9W south, instead. This route had a lot of turns. And on the particular day we rode, there were a lot of downed trees and people on the Saddle River path.
