STS4 – Saddle River & The Orchards of Concklin (+Nyack option) - Recap
Saturday, May 13, 2023 - Recap
Mansions & An Orchard…
75 miles (or 42, 52, 59, or 87 miles)
Saturday, May 13, 2023
In week 4 we'll try something completely different – the Saddle River Trail. It's a beautiful oasis in the middle of a surburban desert… Unfortunately, there are a few miles riding through Hackensack which are a bit ugly. But with Paramus Mall & Ikea nearby, the route we'll go is as good as it gets. But once you've gotten to the trail you'll forget all that…
The trail itself is nicely paved and really quite picturesque. This is a multi-use trail, so be prepared to share with pedestrians.
When we get to the end of the trail we'll have lunch at a nearby diner and then head over to Airmont and then up to South Mountain Road(🎥). From there, we go south through Blauvelt to Sparkill where we catch 9W and stop at Market Diner. Then, instead of going back the "normal" way via 9W we go through Rockleigh, Tenafly, etc. and do the hill climb in Englewood Cliffs.

Shorter Variants of This Ride
🚆There are two train stations along the route Ridgewood at ~21 and Suffern at ~33 miles.
The ride can be shortened to 42 miles (1,964 ft of climbing) by heading east to Westville after the the Saddle River Trail
It can also be shortened to 59 miles (2,916 ft of climbing) by turning around at Upper Saddle River and then heading east through Westville. This route takes the scenic Henry Hudson Drive through along the Palisades.
A hybrid of the above 2 rides is 52 miles following the 59 mile route, but takes the 42 mile route back to Manhattan rather than the scenic Henry Hudson Drive.
Longer Variant of This Ride
To extend the ride another 12 miles, take Bradley Hill Road in Blauvelt to get to Nyack and Upper Nyack "through the back door" (🎥). After a stop at Runcible Spoon Bakery, head south through Piermont to Market Diner. Then, instead of going back the "normal" way via 9W, go through Rockleigh, Tenafly, etc. and do the hill climb in Englewood Cliffs.
Miles: 87
Feet Climbing: 4,294

Hi Folks: Any one doing the 59 miles variant? I'm not sure about the 75 miles--my previous longest ride has been 50 miles, and I missed last weekend's ride.

It will be nice to have you back, Nawaaz!
I suggest everyone download the 2 shorter optional routes as well as the main 75 mile one.
There is a way to use the first part of the 59 mile and the second part of the 42 mile to get a 52-ish mile route, too.
If people think they want to do a shorter option, let me know either here in comments or visa email and I'll try to keep things organized. You can certainly make your final routing decision out on the road on Saturday.
