STS1 โ Market Diner & Nyack - Recap
Sunday, April 16, 2023 - Recap
A variation on a familiar routeโฆ
41 miles (or 29, 35, 56, or 26 ๐ miles)
Sunday, April 16, 2023
Riding up to Nyack is one of the most common routes for NY-area cyclists. Usually people just go up and back on 9W. We mix it up a bit by riding surface streets through Tenafly, Demarest & Rockleigh on the way up before stopping at Market Diner. From there our route is pretty standard up to Nyack The ride along the river as you head north from Piermont is pretty wonderfulโฆย ย (๐ฅ)ย We then do a fairly direct ride back on 9W, though we do route you through Columbia's Lamont campus to avoid a hill climb on 9W where there isn't a good shoulder to ride on. Finally, we get you off 9W onto quiet streets just after the wide shoulders end in Englewood Cliffs.ย
ย
There are lots of cyclist-friendly options for food and fluids โ Market Diner in Palisades, Bunbury's Coffee Shop in Piermont, and Runcible Spoon and Boxer Donut โ both of which are in Nyack.ย
ย
Miles: 41
Feet Climbing: 1,944
ย
ย
๐ To shorten the ride to about 26 miles, you can take the Mario Cuomo Bridge from Nyack to the Tarrytown train station and return to the city via rail. You can use this route: Runcible Spoon Cafe to Tarrytown train station.
ย
If you would prefer a shorter distance but still ride out and back, you can turn around at Market Diner for a 29 mile ride, or at Piermont for a 35 mile ride.
ย
For a longer (56 mile, 2,505 ft climb) variation, branch off at Sparkill to head north up the Joseph B Clarke Rail Trail to Nyack, Congers, and Rockland Lakes Park.

Hi Folks -- a question from a newbie! Is it 41 miles roundtrip to Nyack or one-way? How do we get back? (Just confirming, so I'm not caught unprepared!) Looking forward to the ride.

Yes, it's 41 miles roundtrip, starting and ending at the George Washington Bridge. You can shorten it to about 26 miles by riding from Nyack across the Cuomo Bridge to the Tarrytown train station.

Hey all - just saw the postponement. My weather app doesn't predict rainfall until later in the day. Any chance we can keep Saturday so I can make itย ๐

April 14, 2023
I'm sorry but weather.com has a 40-50% precent range from 11 to 4, and weatherbug has 60% at 2. Weatherbug has Piermont with rain a little earlier with a higher chance 8-10am and then later in the afternoon. Weather.com has rain in Piermont over 40% from 12-4.
ย
It might not rain, but it looks like there will be at least some.
ย
If there are thunderstorms, the bridge authority in Albany will close the Cuomo bridge for cyclists, making it impossible to get to the train in Tarrytown.
ย
I really wish I didn't have to do this, but I think it is a safer call for this weekend. I do apologize if you can't make it now, but safety is paramount.

Peter, what time do we expect to finish on Sunday if we do rhe 41miles and where would be the finish location?
Peter E.
April 14, 2023
It depends largely on how people ride and how much time people spend at the rest stops. I would anticpate between 2 and 3, (4 if people really linger and are social) but you can do it faster if you need to. We will end the route on the Manhattan side of the George Washington Bridge, but I think a fair number of people will get on the Hudson Greenway to head south from there.

Just wanted to let someone know I won't be making it. I had a fall on the way in (nothing too bad), but just kinda ruined my spirits and need to tend to some scrapes.
