SRS1 โ Market Diner & Nyack - Recap
Sunday, April 14, 2024 - Recap
A variation on a familiar routeโฆ
44 miles (or 29, 35, 56, or 26 ๐ miles)
Sunday, April 14, 2024
Ride POSTPONED to SUNDAY!
ย
Riding up to Nyack is one of the most common routes for NY-area cyclists. Usually people just go up and back on 9W. We mix it up a bit by riding surface streets through Tenafly, Demarest & Rockleigh on the way up before stopping at Market Diner. From there our route is pretty standard up to Nyack. The ride along the river as you head north from Piermont is pretty wonderfulโฆย ย (๐ฅ)ย We then do a fairly direct ride back on 9W, though we do route you through Columbia's Lamont campus to avoid a hill climb on 9W where there isn't a good shoulder to ride on. Finally, we get you off 9W onto quiet streets just after the wide shoulders end in Englewood Cliffs.ย
ย
There are lots of cyclist-friendly options for food and fluids โ Market Diner in Palisades, Bunbury's Coffee Shop in Piermont, and Runcible Spoon and Boxer Donut โ both of which are in Nyack.ย
ย
Miles: 44
Feet Climbing: 1,944
ย
ย
๐ To shorten the ride to about 28 miles, you can take the Mario Cuomo Bridge from Nyack to the Tarrytown train station and return to the city via rail. You can use this route: Runcible Spoon Cafe to Tarrytown train station.
ย
If you would prefer a shorter distance but still ride out and back, you can turn around at Market Diner for a 29 mile ride, or at Piermont for a 35 mile ride.
ย
For a longer (56 mile, 2,505 ft climb) variation, branch off at Sparkill to head north up the Joseph B Clarke Rail Trail to Nyack, Congers, and Rockland Lakes Park.

Has any thought been given to tomorrow's wind forecast? Looks like gusts up to 35 mph. Any thoughts of postponing the ride to Sunday?
Peter E.
April 12, 2024
Hey Robert, good question. We've been watching the weather and balancing the wind vs potentially rain on Sunday. Saturday is cooler with wind, but the wind is primarily from the west. Rain on Sunday keeps looking more likely.
ย
April is always tricky and weather can turn on a dime, so it's always a bit of a gamble.
ย
We try keep rides as scheduled as much as possible so that riders have some certainly in their schedule. That being said, if tomorrow morning's conditions look unsafe I'll postpone the ride and send an email by 6:30 or 7 am.

Today ride took some twists and turns but overall a good steady ride.
First~ while waiting at strictly , I saw groups pass..( I didn't know about the blue band , got to get one) I luckily saw a cycle for the cause Jersey and jumped on board . The rest was standard riding . After bombing a downhill , got lost and ended up in a big street market . But luck was on my side again and I found other riders ( blue band ๐) after lunch at bakery the rain came ,. To sum up . A fun course. Nice folk
