Spring Training Series - Ride 5 - Recap
Saturday, May 11, 2019 - Recap
Bear Mountain
80 - 100 Miles
Saturday, May 11, 2019
This is perhaps the most challenging ride of the season due to the climb up Bear Mountain. It's also quite a distance to the mountain, so there is an option to pick up the train in Garrison, NY to return to the city. It's up to you. Enjoy the scenary along the way! Conquer the bear!
Ride 5R – Road Option 65 miles – Train from Garrison, (On Ride With GPS, look for STS19-5R.) https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29423905
Ride 5R – Road Option 97 miles, (On Ride With GPS, look for STS19-5R.) https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29505167
The Hudson Line – Poughkeepsie train from Garrison to Grand Central will take about 1:20 and cost in the range of $10-15 one way. Make sure to check online for schedule information, fares, etc. as service can change due to construction, particularly so on the weekends.
Remember your MetroNorth / LIRR bike pass if you have one. You can buy one for $5 at ticket booths, onboard trains and by mail. Only some Grand Central windows sell them. You cannot buy online. We recommend that you not board the train without the pass because you may potentially receive a high fine. For more information and some useful tips about bringing your bike on the trian see http://web.mta.info/bike/.
PLEASE NOTE: Start times of Spring Training Series rides will change depending on ride distance and weather.

A great day and a beautiful ride! The hills were challenging, but the scenery was worth the effort.
I think I was the only one who did the long route. The section of 9W between West Havestraw and Rockland Lake was bleak, congested, and generally unpleasant, but the rest of the route back to Fort Lee was quite nice.

Probably the most beautiful day and ride we ever had!
The route should always include a suggested lunch stop though, for longer rides even additional snack stops for water and such. I heard some riders never stopped for food yesterday and that's almost dangerous to ride without enough food.
The roundabout before heading up to Bear Mountain is officially closed for bikes; later in the summer they usually have rangers to stop cyclists. So it's always a bit risky but the most scenic route.
