Spring Training Series - Ride 4 - Recap

Saturday, May 4, 2019 - Recap

Ride has concluded.

Bronx River / Pleasantville / Croton

60 - 80 Miles (15-34 Miles if return by train)

Saturday, May 4, 2019

A completely new ride for 2019!

The Bronx River Trail is a lovely trail that winds alongside the Bronx River from Bronxville to Kensico Dam in Valhalla. Once north of the dam, the ride takes you along relatively quiet roads to Pleasantville (63 mile) or the New Croton Reservoir (78 mile) and then down the Old Putnam Rail Trail (North County / South County) back to NYC.

The (T)rail ride is nearly entirely paved, having about 1 mile of gravel which is hard-packed and so skinny tire friendly. The (G)ravel ride takes you over gravel and dirt on the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail from Van Cortlandt Park to Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers. For complete pavement, the (R)oad ride is for Speed Freaks and others who want to avoid curves and gravel.

Ride 4T – Trail Option 63 miles, about 1 mile of hard-packed gravel (On Ride With GPS, look for STS19-4T.) https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29426687

Ride 4G – Gravel Option 63 miles, considerably more gravel than the trail option (On Ride With GPS, look for STS19-4G.) https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29321587

Ride 4R – Road Option 78 miles, no gravel or curves (On Ride With GPS, look for STS19-4R.) https://ridewithgps.com/routes/29321930

The distances shown here are round trip to/from the West Harlem Pier, while the distances shown in RideWithGPS are slightly shorter since the routing ends at Dyckman Street.

For any ride option, people can avoid the metric century (63 miles) or more (78 miles) by returning by MetroNorth. There are MetroNorth stops roughly every 2 miles starting at mile 15 until mile 26, and then another one at mile 34—Pleasantville or Chappaqua—depending on which route you choose. So if you return by MetroNorth, your effective distance will be anywhere between 15 and 34 miles.

Remember your MetroNorth / LIRR bike pass if you have one. You can buy one for $5 at ticket booths, onboard trains and by mail. Only some Grand Central windows sell them. You cannot buy online. We recommend that you not board the train without the pass because you may potentially receive a high fine. For more information and some useful tips about bringing your bike on the trian see http://web.mta.info/bike/.

PLEASE NOTE: Start times of Spring Training Series rides will change depending on ride distance and weather.
