STS2 - Larchmont & Scarsdale (with Rye ext. option) - Recap
Saturday, April 23, 2022 - Recap
Charming Westchester Suburbs
61 miles (or 31 🚆, 49 🚇 miles) / 77 miles (or 48 🚆, 67 🚇 miles)
Saturday, April 23, 2022
We'll start on Wards & Randalls Island and start by taking the Bronx River Greenway (and surface streets) to Bronxville and then ride over to Larchmont. If you haven't ridden in this area before – parts of it are simply gorgeous. We'll all stop for a bit at Umbrella Point in Larchmont which overlooks Larchmont Harbor (🎥). If we're lucky the Larchmont Yacht Club will be setting sail for their Saturday races. Everyone will also go past Premium Millpond which is über picturesque.
Â
The shorter route option heads west to Scarsdale and then comes back on streets that are known to be really pleasant. Then this group will ride back towards Mamaroneck and then ride to New Rochelle. At that point you can take the 6 train, or a route through the Bronx. You can also ride to Soundview and take the ferry back to Manhattan.
Â
The core route is as follows:
Â
Mileage: 46 miles
Feet Climbing: 2,525
Â
61 mile route w/ GPX and cuesheet download options (49 miles + 10 or 12 miles below)
Â
That gets you to Pelham Bay Park at which point you can take the 6 train, or take one of the following routes back to Manhattan…
Â
-
Direct route back to Wards & Randall's Island
10 miles, 314 feet of climbing -
Scenic route back to Wards & Randall's Island
12 miles, 350 feet of climbing - Ferry Point Terminal
Â
Â
If you would prefer to stretch out the ride about by about 15 miles, the Rye extended route (77 miles) will offer you more of what makes Westchester County so special – you'll see quite a few yachts and mansions on this ride. Some of the hightlights are the areas near Westchester Country Club (🎥), Dogwood Lane (🎥), Tide Mill Yacht Basin (🎥), the American Yacht Club – they're just stunning. If you grew up in the area you'll have a bit of nostalga as you ride past Playland. Then you'll come through New Rochelle. The core part of the ride ends at Pelham Bay Park where you can take the subway, ride down to the Soundview ferry, or do a 10+ mile urban ride to Wards & Randalls Island.
Â
Miles: 67 (less w/ MetroNorth return, e.g. 48 from Harrison)
Feet Climbing: 3,690
Â
77 mile route w/ GPX & cuesheet download options (67 miles + 10 or 12 miles back to Wards & Randall's Island)

Dan & I plan to ride out to Rye and then take MetroNorth back from Harrison (48 miles total). We're not super speedy (14-15mph). Jouda will probably ride with us. Others are welcome to join us.Â

Hey Jay! That's a great way to do the ride. Â I encourage anyone who is looking at the shorter routes to strongly consider riding this with you and and taking the train back. Scarsdale and Rye are really beautiful.

Hi everyone,
Â
Looking forward to riding this Saturday. We will be meeting around mile 1.9 on the on 66 mile route above. This is on the far north end of the island. If you cross over into the Bronx you have gone too far.
Â
I will be leading folks on a 77 mile route. This is going to be a pretty full day so we are starting earlier than the rest of the OC ride this week and we will be holding a pretty steady tempo (consistently at or above 16 MPH flat road/no wind speed).
Â
If you can no longer make it please remove your RSVP so I know who to expect.

April 22, 2022
Hi everyone,
Â
Looking forward to the ride tomorrow. It will be a full day
Â
The rest stops will be (based on the RWGPS file above):
1. Mile 21.3 - Larchmont
2. Mile 48 - Harrison
Â
For those continuing on biking back to Randall's Island I also have a planned stop about 24 miles after Harrison at a deli in the Bronx.Â
Â
If we are still riding at 3:30pm then I will need to hop on the closest train to get ready for early dinner plans.Â

Hi everyone,
Â
As of this writing no one has showed up for this ride and I haven't heard from anyone that they're running late. I'm going to give this until 8:10am at which point I'm going to set off on my own ride.Â
