STS 1 – Rockland Lake (or Blauvelt ⛰) + Nyack - Recap
Saturday, April 16, 2022 - Recap
Two beautiful choices…
56 miles (or 47-55 ⛰ miles)
Saturday, April 16, 2022
Faster, longer distance riders start out riding with the other groups through Tenafly, Demarest & Rockleigh to Market Diner. Then they diverge from the other groups and ride up towards Blauvelt on the (paved) Joseph B. Clarke Trail. In Blauvelt they have two options… Continue to Rockland Lake (57 miles total) or climb some lovely hills in Blauvelt State Park (47 or 55 miles total). Both options bring riders to Nyack where they may see the 41 mile riders at Runcible Spoon Bakery or Boxer Donuts. Going south from Nyack everyone takes a pretty standard route back to the City through Piermont and then down 9W.
The Rockland Lake Option
After Blauvelt riders heading to Rockland Lake go through West Nyack and Congers. They ride around Rockland Lake and then drop down the hill to a trail along the Hudson River where they ride for a mile and a half. The trail is gravel (cinders), but it is completely skinny tire friendly (🎥).
Please note: parts of this ride are identical to the 54 mile ride in week 3. If you plan on doing that ride, you should do another route this week. The hill climber route, below, would be a good alternate route.
Miles: 56
Feet Climbing: 2,576

Blauvelt State Park Option
After Blauvelt the 55 (or 47) mile "Hill Climber" version of this ride climbs some lovely hills in Blauvelt State Park which leads them to Nyack where they may meet up with 41 mile riders at Runcible Spoon Bakery or Boxer Donut. The hills in Blauvelt State Park are not particularly difficult. Unless you really hate hills, you should enjoy this route.
If you want to keep your ride to 47 miles and cut off 500 feet of climbing, simply go south from Nyack and skip the part of the ride that goes north through Upper Nyack and along the river. Another option is to go north from Nyack, but turn around when the trail starts going up the hill. If you've never been on the trail along the river, checking it out is highly recommended.
Miles: 55 (or 47 miles if you head back to the City after Nyack)
Feet Climbing: 3,427 (or 2,900 if you head back after Nyack)

The two routes start out together and join back up in Nyack.

I will be leading a 17MPH + cohort through the Rockland Lake route. I would have all the routes for this week downloaded to your preferred device so you can switch mid ride if you want to do something else or cut it short.

Hey Stephen! Great to have to riding with us again this year. We can get a sense of which way people are leaning at Thursday's Zoom briefing. Of course some riders may make that decision while out on the road. Both options are great. Your lead, Kevin, is great to ride with.

Hi everyone,
looking forward to riding tomorrow! if you are RSVPed but can no longer make it please remove your RSVP so I know who to expect. we are a small enough group that we can decide as a group in the morning which route we want to do. Please come with both options saved to your preferred navigation device.
