Nyack Twirling - 2022 False Spring Kick Off
50-60
Saturday, February 12, 2022
Friends,
Route:
https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38537939
Distance: Your mileage will vary depending on where you start and end. The route as provided is 50 miles or so.
Friends,
Can you believe it's almost Spring?! It feels like January started 10 years ago and ended five minutes ago. We have our first false start to Spring this Saturday so it's time to ride!
Those who know me know I love a good Nyack run and 2022 continues the tradition. The outbound route meanders through various back roads that will be familiar to a lot of folks. I'm dutifully avoiding 9W outbound as much as possible. Hold the applause, please.
The inbound portion sorta has no choice but to hug 9W until we cut off and head down the bike path along the Hudson. All paths out of Nyack to NYC involve some sort of climb (unless you go through Yonkers???). We will all just have to suffer a little. The ride has a soft finish along the Hudson River for a family photo. After this point folks can ride together or they can speed off the front and head home. After the GW bridge folks can choose their own adventure home, your beloved
Pace: okkkk it's been a long winter and one of the coldest ones in a while. Some have been training, others probably not. We are all at varying spots in our fitness journey. One gentle nudge though: if you think your flat road/no wind pace is below 15mph at the moment then this is not the ride for you. The ride is listed as 15-18MPH and the expectation is that the faster riders will show grace to the slower riders and help set a reasonable tempo.
This is very much a no drop ride and I've added a series of mandatory stops to keep the group together. This is not the ride for you if you're looking to speed off the front. I can personally hold a 20MPH pace right now and if I end up flexing this to chase runaway riders I will be a grouchy leader.
The one exception to this is the start of the ride where folks should feel free to stretch their legs a bit if they want and cruise across the GW on their own pace after we meet up. Your beloved leader will sweep to make sure everyone gets across. After the GW we should try and be one big happy family.
Lastly - the rider cap is set at 8 for now cause that's the number I'm willing to corrall on my own. If other folks want to co-lead this ride then drop a comment on the post and I'll raise the cap.

Sounds fun!
If it's alright with the group, I'm thinking of going out on 9W and meet everyone at runcible spoon? (Then ride with the group on the way back.)
This week be the start of my training season 😅

FYI - big parts of River Road (Henry Hudson Drive) were washed out in a big storm a few months ago. When I saw someone on Strava ride it I asked how it was and he said pretty rough. You should check its status…

Lol whoops forgot about that. Ok yeah I'm not gonna be the one to figure that out so I shall be changing the route back to Manhattan. It will be something something Tenafly, unavoidable climb, home.
Bob - I did the outbound route laid out here yesterday and it's easier and more forgiving than 9W. 9W is a rolling ascent until you get near the state like where as this route is basically downhill or flat after it cuts off 9W.

River road is ok to ride i find, if you are careful. One small piece is missing asphalt, the rest you only need to check for fallen rocks, but otherwise it's free and clean. I have ridden it several times since, the last few weekends as well.

@Kevin: Some rolling hills is what I'm looking for for my training 😀 I was worried that the back route would be too flat.
