STS3 – Multi-Surface – Rockland Lake, Hudson River Greenway - Recap
Saturday, May 1, 2021 - Recap
Lots of lovely gravel!
64 miles (or 57, 48+ 🚆 miles)
Saturday, May 1, 2021
This ride is a variation on the 54 mile ride that features a lot more gravel. This group will ride with the 54 mile riders up to Rockland Lake. After Rockland Lake when the groups drop down to the river the multi-surface group has the option to ride north up to Treason Site at the southern border of Haverstraw (where Benedict Arnold tried to give West Point to the British). Going up that way is beautiful, but going up there adds 7 miles to the ride.
After Nyack multi-surface riders take the Old Erie Rail Trail (aka the Raymond G Esposito Trail) to Sparkill rather than going to the river in Piermont. Then they ride the gravel trail through Tallman Mountain State Park just before Market Diner. And lastly they take "River Road" (aka Henry Hudson Drive) instead of 9W to get back to the George Washington Bridge.
Miles: 64 (or 57 if you skip Treason Site)
Feet Climbing: 3,100
Multi-Surface Route w/ GPX and cuesheet download options
Another option if you want a shorter ride that still has lots of gravel is to do the full ride to Nyack and then switch to the southbound multi-surface route from week 1. You can then catch MetroNorth in Tarrytown or every few miles going south on the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail.
Switch to this route in Tarrytown for a shorter ride (required MNR return)
IMPORTANT: Jay, the ride leader, will be doing the shorter route with a MetroNorth return to the City. Which station he catches MNR depends on his energy level.
