BIKE TO THE SOUTH POLE

We'll bike around Staten Island and by "around", we mean around. You'll be pleasantly surprised by low-traffic quiet neighborhoods, including miles-long unpaved paths (suitable for all types of bikes) in the island's parks and along the waterfronts. Brief segments of the ride are unavoidably on some of Staten Island's busy streets. No major hills but we're rarely on the level.
Bring a lightweight lock, $ for lunch (about $15 + more for beer) at a Bavarian Inn. Also, if it's warm and sunny, bring sun block.
"25 to 45 miles" isn't a rounding error. Bicycling north from Tottenville is unrewarding, but perhaps we'll do it for bragging rights. Alternatively, SIR enables us to skip the tedious stuff. Hey! With a ferry ride and bicycles, we're already multi-modal. We can head north from Tottenville on SIR and hop back on our bikes mid-Island. If you want to ride SIR all the way north to the ferry, don't forget to bring a Metrocard.
And yes, we will visit the South Pole — at the southernmost tip of New York State.
