Rockland Lakes & Nyack - Recap
Saturday, July 27, 2019 - Recap
Mixed Surface / Gravel (or not)…
~57 miles
Saturday, July 27, 2019
I'm organizing this ride with Cal…
We'll go up 9W to Market Diner (quick stop or no stop, depending), then we'll ride the (paved) Joseph B. Clarke Rail Trail (part of "The Old Erie Trail" – see video), then we'll wind our way to the Rockland Lakes area. We'll ride the boardwalk / paved trail that goes out over Congers Lake (video), then loop most of the way around Rockland Lake, then drop down the hill to the hard-packed cinder trail along the Hudson (video), go through lovely Upper Nyack and stop for lunch at Runcible Spoon. Then we'll continue south on the (gravel) Raymond G. Esposito Trail (the other part of the Old Erie – see videos), then we'll ride some hard-pack gravel in Tallman Mountain State Park (see videos of riding opposite direction), hit Market Diner again if we need to, then do the hill climb car-free in Columbia's Lamont Campus (videos). And then possibly hit State Line Lookout (videos of opposite direction) and River Road (videos) on the way back.
There are two versions:
Gravel – https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30592583
(Mostly) Road – https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30592430
The mostly road version includes 1.5 miles of hard packed cinders, otherwise everything is paved roads or paved trails. The gravel version has substantially more gravel. But all of the gravel sections are completely doable on skinny tires if you slow down a bit.
Robin and I will be riding the gravel version. Cal will be riding the "mostly road" version. So just ride with the group that best suits your preferences. We'll coordinate in the moment as to whether gravel riders meet back up with road riders when the two routes diverge after Nyack.
Important: The pace for this ride is 15-16mph. Please make sure you can sustain that pace. (4 loops around Central Park should take you 1 hour and 45 minutes or less).

Just as a curious aside… the Rockland Bicycling Club is doing a ride the same day which has a lot of overlaps with the route we're taking.
