Dirty Traitor Anniversary Ride - Recap
Saturday, September 21, 2019 - Recap
Treason, Hanging & Gravel
59 miles
Saturday, September 21, 2019
September 21st is the 239th anniversary of Benedict Arnold's treason – when he met with Major John André to work out the details of turning West Point over to the British. This ride commemorates that event. We'll ride to the site where the two met, and then on the way back go past the site where John André was hanged 11 days later.
The ride goes up 9W, past State Line Lookout, through Tallman Mountain State Park (hard pack cinders), along River Road in Piermont, then we stop at Runcible Spoon. Then we go north through Upper Nyack, along the river (mostly hard pack, but a few rougher spots that most people can ride on skinny tires). We turn around when we get to Treason Site (just as we reach Haverstraw). Then we retrace our steps to Runcible Spoon.
On the way back we hit the Old Erie rail trail (aka the Esposito & Clarke trails). The Esposito trail is gravel but generally skinny tire friendly if you slow down a bit. Then we go past the site in Tappan where John André was hanged, then do the climb in Alpine via a route you've probably never done (which has small sections of gravel). And lastly we'll come back via River Road in Palisades Park.
Here's the route:

Everyone should use Ride With GPS (or a Garmin or Wahoo nav system) to navigate. If you need help with Ride With GPS, ask me BEFORE the ride. A handlebar phone mount is strongly encouraged.
Also, the pace for this ride is ~15-16 mph (on the flats), though we'll slow down somewhat on the gravel sections. Please make sure you can sustain that pace. (4 loops around Central Park will take a 15 mph rider 1 hour and 48 minutes or less).
If there's significant rain in the forecast the ride will be pushed to Sunday.
We're starting early because this ride is the same day as NYCC's Escape New York ride. Their earliest start is 7am. We need to be over the GW Bridge before that onslaught of riders. Even so, we'll probably encounter lots of their riders along the way since our route overlaps with theirs somewhat. Hopefully that won't be a problem.

Just so everyone knows, thanks to an aching back I can't go on the ride. But the ride is still on. Look for Ricardo & Paul at the meet-up spot.
