Intro To Road Cycling - Recap
Intimidated by long rides? We can help!
Intro To Road Cycling Is Back For 2021!
We're happy to say that our Intro To Road Cycling series is back this year. If you're not sure about cycling longer distances, then this is the series that will give you the confidence to venture outside the City, and explore places like Bergen, Rockland and Westchester counties.
The Intro series has been integrated into our Spring Training Series this year which means that once you learn how to do road cycling, you can put your new skills to work and go out on rides with our club.
- April 10th – "Week 0": Central Park Laps & Brunch – see if you can do four laps around Central Park (24 miles). If you can complete the full 24 miles, great, you'll know your "ride speed". If not, don't worry – the Intro series will teach you what you need to know. Then join us after the ride for an al fresco brunch in Central Park.
- April 17th – Week 1: Nutrition, Clothing, and Basics of Group Rides
- April 24th – Week 2: Choosing A Bike, Bike Maintenance & Shifting and Braking
- May 1st – Week 3: Dealing With Traffic
- May 8th – Week 4: Club rides in Bergen County NJ – Saddle River Pathway & more – options from 25 to 89 miles
- May 15th – Week 5: Club rides in Westchester County NY – Valhalla & more – options from 23 to 106 miles
- May 22nd – Week 6: Club rides converging on a picnic at Tallman Mountain State Park – options from 36 to 70 miles
- June 5th – Week 7: Club rides to Oyster Bay – options from 24 to 61 miles
Things to know:
- You do not need a road bike to participate. But you do need a bike that's in good working condition – preferably one with gears.
- You will need a helmet to participate (our insurance company insists on it).
- Otherwise, you do not need lots of gear (supplies, clothing, etc.) to participate. There are a few things you need when you're out on the road, but you can buy those things after they're explained to you in the Intro series.
- Since Intro to Road Cycling is part of the Spring Trainng Series, you need to Register for STS to participate.
