Staten Island South Shore Beach Ride

33 miles

Saturday, August 18th (weather permitting)

Meet: 8:45am at the Staten Island Ferry (for 9am ferry departure)

Join us as we explore FIVE beaches along the South Shore of Staten Island…

We'll be taking the 9am ferry from lower Manhattan. When we get to the Staten Island ferry terminal we'll transfer to the Staten Island Railway and take it it's full length to Tottenville. We'll then ride our bikes back along the shore – starting and ending with historic homes with lots of parks and beaches in between. We'll go past five beautiful, sandy beaches. The group will decide which of the beaches they want to stop at and for how long, but assume we'll stop at at least two of the five beaches – so bring a beach towel, and consider wearing a swimsuit under your bike shorts. ;) The beaches are:

Wolfe's Pond Beach

Great Kills Beach

Cedar Grove Beach

Midland Beach

South Beach

The details…

Soon after the start we'll ride past a few historic homes (including one from the mid-1600s) as we ride through Conference House Park on the southern tip of the island. Then we'll ride to the Princes Bay Lighthouse in the Mt Loretto Unique Area, then onto Lemon Creek Park, and then on a a short gravel trails in Wolfe's Pond Park (beach #1 – there's a paved route for people who don't like dirt). We'll continue along the shore and see a variety of neighborhoods and small parks until we get to Great Kills Park (beach #2). We'll then explore the Oakwood Beach neighborhood where they tore down most of the homes after Hurricane Sandy and are letting the neighborhood return to nature. Close to Oakwood Beach is Cedar Grove Beach (beach #3). Then we'll then ride along the greenway at Midland Beach (beach #4) after which we'll head inland a bit for some great pizza at Goodfella's Brick Oven Pizza. After lunch we'll head back to the beach and ride the bike path on the boardwalk along South Beach (beach #5). When we've finally gotten our fill of beaches for the day, we'll head back to the ferry, exploring Fort Wadsworth along the way. And lastly we'll go past the Alice Austen House before getting to the ferry.
